To Inocencia,

I really appreciate your compliment, but seriously, it's quite mediocre. u are talking to a person who almost flunk his GP, so i really doubt my english is any good. Thanks nonetheless.

If you don't mind, can you reveal your identity and how u actually find my blog? Thanks.

p.s. A disclaimer that all my writings all simply my real opinions, experience and emotions, including the cat one (it's not a story, but i do admit the feelings of the mother cat is a bit exaggerated, but i feel it somehow).

actually i think i am very inspired by Nicholas Sparks - a guy who wrote romance novels. He is very good. A Walk to Remember caused me to cry. The Wedding touches me. and Nights in Rodanthedan inspired me. haha.

Fallen

“Thrilled and delighted when she looked into my eyes, excited and panicking when she speaks to me, contented and gratified as I observed her from her actions…” It is that clear sparkling eyes that whispered gently of her intelligence and wit, the sweet smile and courteous laughter that never fails to melt heart; her voice in its hopefulness and softness (complements that careful selection of words) seems musical and angelic, lingers in the deepest of one’s mind before finally absorbed and understood. It is this very instance, when one looks through all her faults and flaws, and sees her in the light of perfection and impeccable self, awed by her ineffable presence, trapped in the moment. Yes, one could feel that very chemistry of nervousness and ecstasy.

In my reverie, I pictured her in a gown, full of elegance and grace, and captivated I was, lost in that moment of magic, stunned and speechless. My mind was a total blank except for the wish for the stoppage of time. High above, the stars glitter and shine in the dark and mysterious sky, as if somebody were taking photographs in hope of remembering this night forever…

“Never have I fallen, but I’m quickly on my way.”

Instinct of a mother

She froze at she saw the giant figure approached, praying that he will stop there. In seconds, she knew her prayers were not at all answered. Anxiety and nervousness inundated her. She knows she must save her son, not to mention herself. Time seems to pass so quickly, and the towering man soon loomed over her. Desperately, she tried to grab hold of her child and rushed for safety, yet he was too heavy. The attempt was simply futile. At the split second, she made a choice no mothers would want to make – the abandoning of the child. She knows battle with giant is a foolish act, but perhaps she calculated that she would stand a better chance of getting her baby back by saving her own neck first. With one great leap, filled with worries and unwillingness, she left her precious son in the path of the ogre.

She trembled as he stomped slowly and steadily to her child, in complete fear and anguish She wondered if she can save it at that moment, but she knew that calmness was more important. She might not get a second chance. Her child, instead of being fearful, boldly walked towards the huge feet instead. What foolishness! What stupidity! She blamed herself for the failure of imparting survival skills to her child. But it seems to late now. She positioned herself, ready to make an attempt to make the rescue, no matter how low the chances, no matter how futile it may be. She knew very well that her child would not survive if she died as well. The young male, in all his curiosity, pushed forward, edging nearer and nearer to the giant. Everything in this world seems so new, so strange, so interesting, and he bears no thought about the pair of anxious eyes staring at him. Curiosity kills the cat, she might have thought bitterly. How true the idiom it seems now!

She panicked as the giant pursued the young boy. She badly wants to jump forward, but held her ground instead. She saw the hand of the giant flying down, and she found herself totally confused and tormented. It was the same hand that brings food, and it is the same hand that is so capable of inflicting so much pain and physical damage. The arm did not land destructively, as she thought it would have. Instead, it scoop up her son and brought him nearer to her. Still, she shivered, frightened that the man might change his mind, as he often does.

Much to her relief, he was brought near the hideout. With thankfulness and relief in her eyes, she crept nervously to her son and embraced him, calling gently to him. Not wanting to take a risk, she nudged her son towards the hideout, defiant though he was. But he followed anyway, unwillingly though. There’s still plenty to see and hear, plenty to taste and feel. With one final look at the surroundings, the kitten obeyed the mother and pranced towards the drain, wondering when he will ever see dawn again.

I have missed my bus, and yet the maternal instinct of the cat touches me. I knew it was worth it. I made my way to the seat, reaching out for the newspapers with my gigantic arms, wondering if I’ll ever see the kitten again.

Rights

On day, as part of our GP lesson, we are supposed to attain a piece of newspaper article, summarise it and perhaps do a speech, together with an evaluation. Among those presented was one girl from Cedar, who chose an article from the straits Times regarding the marriage to a Thai of a Singaporean man.

To summarise, a man looking for a wife went to Thailand after paying a sum. Apparently, he had 1700 choices to select from, and in the end, he got one that was 2 times younger than him, and 3 times lighter than him. (22 years and 43 kg). The article also described Singaporeans women as fussy and materialistic, which of course agitated some of the readers (especially the female ones).

Naturally, the presenter was aggravated too, indignant and in her evaluation, declared such activity as an atrocity and condemned the act of parading 1700 women in front of men as a downright humiliation to women. She questioned the presence of women rights, and also highlighted that the basis of marriage should be love and not as an escape from poverty and hardship.

I have an urge to present the other side of the coin, and I hope to do so in an unbiased and unprovocative manner.

In Thailand and other countries, where poverty thrives, women (classified as the weaker sex) often treated and deemed less significant than men. They are usually beaten up, humiliated and more than often, have to bear their husbands’ unfaithfulness and infidelity silently and painfully. Women rights as such are often forfeited. In our modern developed country, indeed we have to be thankful that there is equality (perhaps a bad news for man, but nevertheless it’s imperative) between man and women (though at times I wonder if the law is even more in favour of women now, haha). As a result, some of the younger women in these countries resolve to marry a foreigner in hope of a better life.

Are such matchmaking services simply reducing women to dollars and cents? Perhaps the Cedar girl can’t stand the notion of 1700 young girls parading round a highly obese and old fellow.

Yet I can’t help but wonder. Do these 1700 girls feel humiliated to do this? And is it their wish to marry someone in hope of a better life? I think simple-minded they are, they just wanted a man who does not beat them, will provide for them (maybe not a life for a rich lady, but an average comfortable life), will be honest and faithful. Looks, as much as how they may value to the average Singaporean girl on the street today, is just secondary. But if the girls are being forced to marry due to monetary reasons (perhaps family liabilities), then this is not right.

This type of marriage is not the first one that appears on the news. There are many recounts of such couples that I read about. Some of these, despite the age gap, can become very ideal couples. So much for love being the basis of marriage… Romance is definitely not. How many couples, claiming to love each other, divorce within a few years of marriage? The marriage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston already is one example. Perhaps in the modern day time, many (including men and women) are both materialistic individuals, and self-interest is what that sums up their life. The basis of marriage is not that romantic love, infatuations, but simply the ability to think of others, to be others-centered. That is love, but it’s termed as agape love.

Perhaps to most Singaporeans, the parade is just a disgrace to women’s society. Yet on another perspective, they are just seeking happiness, happiness in more easily contented manner. To me, at least it is better than them prostituting themselves, being smuggled into countries and compelled to be involved in the sex trade.

Is it right for a man to pay to get a wife? I think it is, as long as the other party does not mind it. But the question is that given a choice, will they do it?

My answer is that when given a choice, who doesn’t wants somebody wealthy, fit, young, energetic, romantic? But the question is will the marriage last? Sadly, in today’s world, that doesn’t seem to be the most important criteria for marriage.

As for women rights, maybe one day, these countries will become rich and there will be true equality. The issue of global poverty is seen here. But the battle for equality is just unreality. It’s simply a war for selfish interest. Man seek to triumph over woman and vice versa. This is an issue of sin, something only God can solve.

To each his own.

btw, feel free to rebute and argue.
